Big Band At Birdland Restaurant In New York

The show at the new Birdland Restaurant, which opened on Broadway, December 15, offers music to suit just about every taste. Entertaining at their specialties are (left to right), trumpeter Max Kaminsky, Dixieland style; saxophonist Lester Young, swing; "Hot Lips" Page, famed for sweet swing; Charlie Parker on the alto sax, representing bop; and pianist Lennie Tristano, exponent of a new style called "music of the future." It marked the first time that these noted musicians, representing completely different schools of modern music, were gathered on the same stage. Date: December 16, 1949.
